Car Rental vs Taxi vs Uber in Dubai: Real Cost Comparison

25 January 20266 min readBy Auto to Rental Team

Dubai has cheap taxis (relative to Europe and US), Uber and Careem everywhere, and a decent metro. So is it worth renting a car? We did the math on real Dubai trips so you don't have to.

Cost per kilometre — apples to apples

Taxi (RTA): AED 5 flag-down + AED 2.07/km. A typical 15km airport→Marina ride = AED 35-40 + ~AED 5 toll = AED 45.

Uber Comfort: ~AED 2.5/km + AED 8 base. Same 15km trip = AED 50-55.

Careem Now: similar to Uber, sometimes 5-10% cheaper with promos.

Rented economy car: AED 79-150/day. Petrol at ~AED 0.20/km. A 15km trip costs ~AED 3 in fuel + a fraction of your day rate.

The math flips fast once you start driving more than 20-30 km per day.

Scenario 1: One-day visit (250 km driven)

Taxi/Uber: AED 50/trip × 6 trips = AED 300, plus tolls

Rental car: AED 130 (1-day) + AED 50 (fuel) + AED 20 (Salik tolls) + AED 20 (parking) = AED 220

Winner: Rental by ~AED 80. But the convenience of just calling Uber matters — only worth renting if you're moving around a lot.

Scenario 2: One-week tourist (4 trips/day)

Taxi/Uber: AED 40 × 4 × 7 = AED 1,120

Rental car: AED 99 × 7 + AED 200 fuel + AED 100 tolls + AED 50 parking = AED 1,043

Winner: Rental by AED 80 + you have a car 24/7. Worth it for sure.

Scenario 3: One-month resident (15 km commute + weekend trips)

Daily commute via Uber: AED 25 × 2 × 22 work days = AED 1,100

Weekend trips (4 weekends, ~AED 200 each): AED 800

Monthly transport budget by taxi/Uber: AED 1,900-2,500

Monthly rental (Yaris): AED 1,800 + fuel AED 400 + tolls AED 100 + parking AED 100 = AED 2,400

Roughly tied — pick based on whether you value 'never thinking about cars' (Uber) or 'always having a car ready' (rental).

When taxis/Uber win

  • You're staying 1-2 days only and won't go to Hatta, Abu Dhabi, etc.
  • You'll mostly be on JBR, Downtown, Marina, where parking is expensive (AED 20-40/day) and traffic crawls
  • You don't have a credit card or want to skip the rental paperwork
  • You'll drink alcohol with dinners (no DUI risk)

When rental wins

  • You'll do day trips (Abu Dhabi, Hatta, Ras Al Khaimah)
  • You'll commute or move around 3+ times per day
  • You're staying 7+ days
  • You want luggage capacity (4 people + bags)
  • You want to drive at unusual hours (5am beach trip, midnight dunes)

Public transport — when does it make sense?

Dubai Metro is cheap (AED 3-8/trip) and clean, but it doesn't reach many places (no station at the Burj Al Arab, JBR, most beaches). It works if your trip is mostly along Sheikh Zayed Road. Otherwise you still need taxis or a car for the last 5-10km.
